Jazz in Rollingwood
With the summer of COVID19 humming along in the odd way that it is, I’ve found myself with a greater than usual thirst for the arts. The problem is that, for the most part, I have only been able to fill my cultural cup through online galleries, music and my own personal endeavors in painting and photography. As fulfilling as this can be, it doesn’t quite sate the soul like a good live show.
All of that changed for a few hours on August 1st when the Levon Mikaelian Trio (one of our fine neighbors here in Rollingwood) treated us all to a superb jazz concert from the stage of his front yard on Brooklawn Terrace. It was a great turnout and, based on the comments that followed on the listserv, enjoyed by all.
The set list was a combination of Levon’s recently released album, Untainted, which is based on Armenian folk songs and his experiences as a youth, as well as jazz standards (Someday My Prince Will Come among others).
Levon is originally from Armenia and immigrated to the US at age 18. He is the founder of the Chevy Chase Arts Academy, a music school for all levels taught by working musicians.
Thank you to Levon and the band for such a treat. On saxophone and flute was Brian Falkowski, on bass, Jon Steel and on drums, Kelton Norris.
Here are a few videos from the show. Enjoy!
